Wondering what you’ll learn?
What will your puppy learn?
In Puppy Charm School (PCS), your pup learns five fundamental skills:
Healthy Puppy. Your puppy will love his veterinarian and is easy to examine, treat, and medicate.
Confident Puppy. Your pup will be able to go everywhere and love everyone — and all who meet him will love him right back! Your puppy will be well mannered, outgoing, and friendly to dogs and people.
Social Puppy. Learning how to read other dogs is a crucial skill for a puppy to grow into a well-mannered dog. This class will help you and your puppy decipher what that other dog is saying — and how to react appropriately.
Good Puppy. All puppies are capable of permanent learning — whatever you teach them now (right now!) can be retained for the rest of their lives! Teach your pup to listen to you and be interested in what you have to say.
Parenting Your Puppy. Puppies don’t come with owner’s manuals! We’ll help you figure out just what to do when your puppy is nipping, stealing things, peeing in the house, chewing, etc.
What will your dog learn?
We have five subjects in K9 Building Blocks (K9BB):
Self Control. Your dog will learn how to settle down, listen when you ask him to do something, and learn his name.
Communicating with Your Dog. Learn how to get your dog to do what you’d like him to do, instead of fights and frustration.
Attention and Focus. This is something every dog can do a little better! Teach your dog to pay attention to you, even in distracting situations!
Public Appearances. Teach your dog to blend in when you’re out in public, instead of standing out because of his barking, pulling on the leash, or other embarrassing behavior.
Teamwork. Learn how you and your dog can be on the same team instead of experiencing frustration when your dog doesn’t listen.
We’ll help fix things like:
- pulling on the leash
- ignoring you
- not listening to what you ask
- running away instead of coming when you call
- jumping on people
- barking and chasing things
We’ll teach your dog to:
- come when you call him
- look at you when you say his name
- sit to greet people
- walk politely on leash
- settle down
- focus on you
- lie down calmly
- and more!

*What is rolling enrollment? When can I start classes?
Rolling enrollment means you can start anytime after you’ve registered and paid online, created an account for our online class scheduling calendar, and attended an Orientation. There’s no waiting for a class to form — if there is availability, you can sometimes start within a week of registering your dog.
Here’s what to expect:
- You register and pay online.
- Smart Dog University emails you a confirmation within one business day [Business day = Monday – Friday; 9a – 4:30p]. The email contains logistical information and gives you the link to the video Orientation.
- You watch the Orientation online and answer a few quick questions.
- Smart Dog University will send you a link to the online scheduling calendar so you can begin scheduling your sessions with your dog.
- You follow the link in the email to create an account, then sign your dog up for the classes of your choice.
What if my dog is aggressive? Can he still attend classes?
For the safety of our clients and their dogs, no aggressive dogs are allowed in classes. In-home, private sessions are the best alternative for dogs who either don’t like other people or dogs, or who find public places frightening.
