With a couple of my dogs getting older and experiencing the very beginnings of limited mobility (due to arthritis), I’m always on the lookout for ways to ensure their quality of life. We wouldn’t think of not giving a person access to a wheelchair if he couldn’t walk, but very often dogs are euthanized if they become unable to use their hind legs.
Imagine my delight when I found these stories (with inspiring pictures) of dogs (and a pig — #2 “Chris P. Bacon” of all names). The stories vary from a retired combat dog who suffered a spinal injury, a stray hit by car, to a dog shot and left on the side of the road. All of these dogs are living amazing lives, some even training to be therapy dogs.

Felix isn’t supposed to use his one of his hind legs much right now. We don’t have a wheelchair (sine we don’t want the muscles to atrophy), but we are using a stroller for most of our heavy walking etc. to keep him off it, except of 3 x 10 minute walks per day. I wouldn’t hesitate to get him a wheelchair though, if he needed it. He’d be the happiest little wheelie ever.
Yes, I’m very new to the wheelchair for dogs world, so I’ll be curious to see how Felix goes with the stroller. I think it’s great idea. Thirty minutes of walking sounds like a good amount (I’m talking strictly for stimulation — mental and physical), and he gets to stroll around in the stroller for even more outside time.
