Dogs are just like people: no two are the same. Even littermates can be vastly different from one another. Throw breed differences, genetics, and environment into the mix and it’s easy to see why dogs are so different from one another both in looks and in personality.
Take Siena (Great Dane puppy – 17 weeks old now) and Asti Spumante (12 weeks old) above. These two dogs are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to fearlessness.
Asti was here for five minutes before she jumped into the wading pool –– not knowing how deep it was, what water is all about, or with any regard for her personal survival. If I could capture her philosophy it would be something like this: Just Do It (apologies to Nike for stealing their meme).
Sweet Siena hasn’t even ventured one paw into that pool despite the fact that it might only come up to her ankles, whereas it’s up to Asti’s tummy because of the size difference. Siena’s philosophy seems to be: I’m fine right where I am, thank you very much. No need to go trying out everything in the world.
Siena’s the ultimate snuggler, but Asti can’t hold still long enough to reap the benefits of sitting on a lap.
While very different, each dog brings something very special and unique to this house, as does every dog in every home. Which is why we — people — love our dogs so much.
Celebrate your dog’s unique traits, even if they’re a bit quirky and silly. Sometimes those are the most endearing.
