We are ready for vacation! Well, the dogs don’t really know that vacation starts tomorrow, but they will be happily suprised when we start loading the car!
Every year since we’ve been married, my husband and I have loaded all the dogs into the car and headed to Lake Anna.
We love to vacation with the dogs. We love to do just about everything with the dogs, really.
When we took our dream trip to Europe a couple of years ago, the phrase that kept coming out of our mouths was “Wow, would the dogs love this!” We were on our 10th day (or a 14 day trip) when I started to wish we were going home the next day. In the middle of the Black Forest, a spectacularly beautiful spot, I’m wishing I was back home with the dogs. That’s just not right. But it’s how we are.
Do you vacation with your dog(s)? Where do you go? What do you do? Do your dogs like it? (Ask me about my Aussie [long gone, now] we took camping and how miserable she was, poor girl. I have pictures to prove it.)
If you don’t (or can’t) take your dog, do they stay with family? Boarding facility? Do you have someone come stay at your house?

So far, we’ve only taken one vacation with Elka, though we do intend to repeat it. We went to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina for a week in May (the traditional family vacation is in June, on the odd years). She had a lot of fun splashing in the surf, and spending a week living with all of our favorite friends! The one time that we vacationed without her, a couple of our friends stayed at the house with her.
We try to always include Daisy on vacation. I hate leaving her behind and she loves to “go”. When it’s clear we are starting to pack for something she goes and sits by the door just so we don’t forget her. We are headed to Acadia National Park for Labor Day and rented a dog friendly place so she can come with. She is part of the family so why would I want to leave her behind?
I love that Elka’s vacationed with you. I bet you had fun watching her have fun in the surf! I don’t have kids, but I can now start to understand why parents get such a kick out of watching their kids have so much fun.
Yay! I’m all for exploring new places (and old familiar ones, too) with your dog. One of these days, we’re going to get an RV — or at least a pull-behind trailer — so we can more easily explore the U.S. with the dogs.

We are still trying to figure out how to sneak her on to a cruise ship! When we reluctantly leave her behind, she finds her second home at Happy Hounds Lodge in Mt. Airy. She comes home a dirty, sleepy little puppy 🙂
I love vacationing with dogs. It’s opened my world to so many things I never did as a kid–kayaking, hiking, camping. I wouldn’t trade time outdoors with a pup for all the museums and fine restaurants in the world.
One the 2 or 3 times we had to go dog free, we’ve had a pet sitter stay at the house. I figure that keeping one thing stable (being home) when the people go away is best. And we’ve had very good pet sitters.
Last week, the San Juan Islands, WA. Swimming, hiking, sailing, rolling in the pine-pitch at campsites with his best bud Sophie, Rex had the most fabulous time. And at the end of the week our sailboat had enough dog fur to make another dog. Mid-large sized Golden Retriever, just add organs. Any takers?
And I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Where can we go next?
