Turn-in day came and went and I'm still alive. Not happy, but alive. I will give you all the details maybe tomorrow. It's still a bit raw for me right now. Lots more tears for lots longer than I expected. Just thinking about him brings them 'round again. I need to stop crying – I have a monster headache from all the sniffing!
Of course, it didn't go as planned. But we got through it. And I managed to keep it together until we were back in the car.
The report from Talos' new keeper was that he had a rough night, too. Lots of pacing, whining, uncertainty. T and I had the same kind of night…
Remind me WHY I do this? It's torture.

I understand how you must feel, this must be so hard, I think I could not have done it. You do this because you have a gift. Talos will make a huge difference in somebody’s life because of you. Be proud, not everybody can make such a difference. Kudos to you, and to Talos.

You do this to help someone make theirs lives a little bit easier and better; you do this because you are a wonderful, caring person that gives her time freely; You do this because it makes a difference — because YOU make a difference.

Admit it. Knowing that he had a rough night confirms that he loves you! If he had gone & didn’t you would have been hurt. I would have been. You’ve taken a puppy & turned him into a smart, loving, service Dane. That’s amazing! Not all dogs can be that & not all people can train like you did & still do. You gave him your all. You sent him off with part of your heart. It will take time for your heart to regrow that part. So cry, cry as much as you need. And love Teddy. He needs you.

You do this because you know he will better someones life. And you both love each other. I know the days to come will be tough, but remember the outcome. I love you more than you know right now.

Why it is you do this? That is the question I ask myself every other day :). So I can’t answer for you. :))
But I do know my tears are worth someone’s independence.
I know for each one of us the experience is different, but after I saw my first puppy work, and then while at Wilderwood Service Dogs, got too work with the dogs and their new handlers….. I can’t be too sad…

That you are so sad to let him go is the unfortunate part of loving him enough to make him into the wonderful dog he’s become.
Be very kind to yourself as you grieve. It will take some time to just miss him and feel proud of what he’s going to accomplish in this next part of his training.
