Radio Shack. Wal-Mart. Farmers market. Public library.
These were my errands on Saturday morning. With Talos, Great Dane service puppy in training. Thank goodness he didn't look like this when he was out in public. This must be his "at home face."
What normally would have taken me 1.5 hours took about 3.5 hours. You can't go anywhere with a dog like this and not get stopped along the way.
Which, in reality, is half the reason I take him along with me. Not because I want my shopping trips to take longer, but because I need Talos to meet and greet lots of people during this socialization period. I need him to meet as many new and friendly people each day as possible. A shopping trip on Saturday fits the bill.
He laid quietly in Radio Shack when I got the thingamabob connectors for my husband. He dutifully followed me all over Wal-Mart. (I couldn't find a thing - the store is being remodeled.)
He wanted to sample the cantaloupes at the Farmer's market, although the dessert table was his favorite. No, I didn't let him sample the cantaloupe or the desserts – but both were a good opportunity for Talos to practice his self control.
Finally, we wound up in the nice, cool, air conditioned library. He laid down while I was looking at a book and I didn't think I was going to be able to get him moving again! We met so many nice people: kids, adults, men with hats, kids with food right at mouth-level for Talos… It was fantastic!
So even if you can't get into Wal-Mart or Radio Shack, there's no law against walking through the parking lot, sitting on the bench outside the stores, and asking people to nicely pet your dog. Get out there and enjoy your dog and this weather…and work on socialization, too. Isn't summer the best?!
